Formerly known as Faktychno Sami which in Ukranian means 'actually alone', Qarpa is a post- industrial band originally from Ivano-Frankivsk. The band's frontwoman is Irena Karpa—Ukrainian singer and writer. The band released eight studio albums.
What is post-industrial music anyway? Industrial music is a genre of electronic and experimental music which draws on harsh, transgressive or provocative sounds and themes. Allmusic defines it as the 'most abrasive and aggressive fusion of rock and electronic music'. Post-industrial music covers genres and styles that were influenced by industrial, taking its dark and mechanical aesthetics and combining it with more accessible genres such as rock or EDM.
Here below I decided to share the music video of Soledad from Qarpa's 2011 album & I made a man. The lyrics are in Spanish and English and they talk about a cheating husband. Frida Kahlo is probably used as a metaphor as she had a complex relationship with her husband Diego Rivera. Kahlo had affairs with both men and women and Rivera cheated on her with her younger sister Cristina. Back to the song, the tone is melancholic and defeated. Musically speaking, Soledad sounds somehow both exotic and urban. The cello part has a Spanishy vibe to it and the drum section reminds me of trip-hop.
Give a listen to the song and let me know what you think. This is an underground band that deserves in my humble opinion more recognition outside Ukraine.
