'Stand up! Stand up!', ...Somaya is singing and the beat is pulsing in my veins. Her single is one catchy tune with a stadium-sized chorus which makes me wanna get up and dance.
But there is more to it, the young singer from North Carolina is hoping to raise awareness on a very important issue: sexual assault. And there is no better medium than music to do this.
I talk about all sort of musical feelings in this blog, but I have never written a piece on a song conveying such a powerful message. It was when I first listened to 'Stand up' that I thought it was about time I'd do so. Somaya wrote it in October 2016 because she wanted to give a voice to sexual assault's victims, she has always been passionate about social issues.
Well she is certainly succeeding in her mission, with 11,741 views on youtube, and a tv interview about the song, she is getting the recognition she deserves for managing to use music to raise awareness on such an important topic.
On another note, the whole album from which the single is taken is really worth a listen. The record is an electro-pop collection of songs of varying tempos. It has something for everyone, from the broken-hearted to the victim of sexual assault.
